Students in 8th, 9th, & 10th grades interested in attending college after high school are encouraged to apply to TRIO Upward Bound for the opportunity to attend a free academic summer program taking place at Central Lakes College in Brainerd, MN. The summer component begins June 4th and ends July 20th. Students typically stay on campus Sunday evening-Friday afternoon. Those going to their first summer program take Math, English, Science & a Foreign Language class four days a week. There is an opportunity for field trips on Wednesday’s with college visits being a key focus. Elective classes occur three days a week and allow students to experience subjects they prefer learning about. Upper classman are offered the opportunity to take a summer college class and earn college credits. One highlight of the summer program includes high school students being paired with college student tutor/mentors who lead evening activities ranging from game nights to jello fights.
This is the first year the summer program component will be taking place in Brainerd because the Central Lakes College Foundation purchased student housing this past October. Upward Bound staff are excited to be able to host the program on their home campus! Past years the program was hosted at Saint Cloud State University, The College of Saint Benedict and Bemidji State University.
